Pueblo ITEST of New Mexico uses information technology (IT) experiences to interest
American Indian students and their teachers to use innovative approaches to science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through Pueblo Indian community based
education (CBE). Pueblo CBE is a unique pedagogy emerging from within Pueblo communities,
which SFIS continues to expand upon.. CBE begins with Pueblo tribal leadership setting the
learning priorities for Pueblo youth. Then the school works in partnership with Pueblo
communities to create curricula that meet both New Mexico State Standards for STEM and the
Pueblo defined learning priorities. Students have experiences in their home Pueblo communities
doing work related to IT and then they share the information they have gathered, along with their
analyses, with appropriate Pueblo stakeholders –tribal leaders, tribal environmental departments,
and/or tribal community members. Santa Fe Indian School has refined Pueblo CBE for the past
10 years; Pueblo ITEST capitalizes and builds on CBE to increase STEM interest and
achievement for Pueblo mid school and high school students. SFIS was awarded an ITEST grant
in September 2005; this report chronicles Pueblo ITEST from December 2005, when the project
was fully staffed, to December 2007, when most student summer internships were complete.
